Tragedy Hits Nollywood as Rising Actor and Videographer Die After Allegedly Consuming Toxic Drink in Owerri

The Nollywood community has been plunged into grief following the sudden and shocking death of two promising talents—Evans, a budding actor, and Nnunnu, a skilled videographer—after allegedly consuming a locally popular alcoholic beverage, Calypso, in Owerri, Imo State.

According to a Facebook post by industry colleague Chukwudi M. Udokwu, the incident occurred shortly after a successful film shoot. To celebrate the day’s accomplishment, the producer reportedly offered the crew a round of Calypso, a once-common spirit in Nigeria.

However, within hours, four crew members—including Evans and Nnunnu—began experiencing intense stomach pain and vomiting. What was initially believed to be a minor reaction quickly escalated.

“They thought it was just a mild stomach upset,” Udokwu explained. “But the pain intensified quickly. By the time they tried to arrange transportation to the hospital, Evans and Nnunnu were already struggling for their lives.”

The victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, but Evans and Nnunnu were declared dead on arrival. The other two affected crew members were placed on oxygen and are currently undergoing treatment.

Describing the loss as devastating, Udokwu wrote, “This is a black Friday in Nollywood. We’ve lost a vibrant young actor and an exceptionally talented director of photography. This one really hurts.”

In the wake of the tragedy, the Imo State Police Command has launched a full investigation to determine the cause of death. An autopsy will be conducted to provide more answers.

The incident has also sparked renewed concerns over the safety of Calypso, which has reportedly been banned by the Federal Government. Questions are now being raised regarding how the producer obtained the drink and whether it may have been expired or adulterated.

“This painful event serves as a stark reminder about the importance of vigilance and caution,” Udokwu added. “No one can ever be too careful.”

As Nollywood mourns this heartbreaking loss, tributes have continued to pour in for Evans and Nnunnu—both remembered as hardworking professionals with immense potential and bright futures ahead.
