A tragic incident occurred on the evening of March 19, 2025, when a petrol-laden tanker exploded on Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The explosion resulted in a massive fire that destroyed at least 30 vehicles, with several motorists feared dead.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker, carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), lost control and crashed on the bridge, leading to a fire that rapidly spread to nearby vehicles. The incident occurred during the evening rush hour, causing chaos as motorists and passengers attempted to flee the area to avoid the advancing flames.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and military personnel, were promptly deployed to the scene to control the situation and ensure public safety. Security officials cordoned off the affected area, directing traffic away to facilitate the operations of firefighting teams and medical personnel.
As of now, the exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed, but fears persist that several lives may have been lost due to the intensity of the fire and the number of vehicles involved. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of fuel transportation and the need for stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
This unfortunate event adds to a series of similar incidents in recent times. In January 2025, a tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway resulted in at least 86 fatalities and 55 injuries. These recurring tragedies highlight the urgent need for improved safety protocols in fuel transportation and emergency response mechanisms to prevent future occurrences.
