Enugu State Government To Ban Keke and Minibuses from Major Roads, Introduces BRT System

The Enugu State Government has announced a major transportation reform aimed at modernizing the city’s public transit system and improving traffic flow. Effective from March 30, 2025, tricycles (Keke) and minibuses will no longer be allowed to operate within Enugu’s metropolitan area. Instead, Kekes will be restricted to smaller streets, while minibuses will be designated to serve rural areas.

A Step Towards a Mega City

This decision aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of transforming Enugu into a modern, well-structured, and efficient urban center. The state government believes that the increasing congestion caused by tricycles and minibuses has slowed down development, making it necessary to introduce a more organized transportation system.

"We are gradually shaping Enugu into the mega city we envisioned. Governor Mbah is executing the plans he fought so hard to implement. This is the leadership Enugu needed,” said a senior government official.

BRT System to Provide Better Alternatives

To replace the phased-out Kekes and minibuses in the metropolitan area, the state government will launch a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The BRT buses, expected to commence operations soon after March 30, will provide a safe, affordable, and efficient transport option for residents.

In a bid to support students, the government has also announced special fare exemptions:

Secondary school students will enjoy free rides on BRT buses.

Tertiary students will receive subsidized fares, easing their transportation costs.

Public Reactions and Implications

The policy has sparked diverse reactions among Enugu residents. Many have applauded the move, recognizing it as a bold step towards urban development. Others have raised concerns about the immediate impact on small-scale transport operators and the readiness of the new BRT system.

A resident, Mr. Chukwudi Eze, shared his thoughts: “We thank God we got it right in the last election. Imagine if we had chosen the wrong leader—what would have been our fate? Mbah understands the job, and he is delivering.”

What’s Next?

The Enugu State Government has assured the public that the implementation of the new policy will be smooth and well-managed. Adequate measures are being put in place to ensure that commuters face minimal disruption during the transition.

With this move, Enugu is taking one step closer to becoming a fully structured mega city, setting the pace for other Southeastern states to follow. Residents are urged to support the new initiative and embrace the transformation that lies ahead.
