A devastating accident occurred on Monday morning along the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge, resulting in the loss of one life and leaving four others injured. The fatal crash involved a J5 Ford bus and a Mercedes truck, which collided at Ilubirin, inward Sura, on the ever-busy bridge.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened around 7:00 am, when the J5 Ford bus, loaded with passengers, was traveling towards the Lagos Island. The Mercedes truck, which was heading in the same direction, suddenly lost control and swerved into the path of the oncoming bus.
The impact of the collision was severe, causing significant damage to both vehicles. The bus was badly damaged, with its front end crushed, while the truck's container was torn apart.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Nigerian Police Force, quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance. The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the deceased was taken to the mortuary.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but eyewitnesses suggest that the truck's brake failure may have contributed to the crash.
The Lagos Third Mainland Bridge, which connects the Lagos Island to the mainland, is one of the busiest roads in the state. The accident has caused significant traffic congestion in the area, with motorists advised to take alternative routes.
The incident has also raised concerns about road safety in Lagos, with many calling for increased measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
