FG promises to address the ongoing building collapse issue and calls for the return of SON to ports.

Nigeria's frequent building and construction collapses are a problem that the Federal Government has promised to fully address in order to end the catastrophe.

This forum could not have come at a time better than this when cases of incessant building collapses are being witnessed in the country at all time and I think that for both SON and stakeholders that are here, the question is what is the cause of this and what can be done in the midst of several factors that range from standardisation and quality, certification and efficient regulatory system and enforcement?

“I think it behoves all of us to have the courage to tackle this menace. It requires courage and it is possible to do it. It is possible to exist in a country which such incidents are no more,” the minister said.

The Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, announced this during Tuesday's National Conference on the Building and Construction Sector in Abuja. 

At the conference, which was organized by the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) with the theme "Adherence to Standard Practices: Bedrock of Sustainable Development in the Building/Construction Sector," the minister voiced his concern about the frequent building collapses that occur throughout the nation and emphasized the necessity of taking decisive action to address the issue.

The minister also voiced concerns over the lack of SON at Nigeria's seaports, pointing out that the ports are a major source of building materials entering the nation. In order to guarantee that only high-quality materials are authorized for usage, he emphasized that this scenario demands attention.
