The late Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, designer of Nigeria’s national flag, was laid to rest by his family one year after his passing. He passed away on August 29, 2023 at the age of 87. Despite the federal government's unfulfilled promise of a state burial, his family proceeded with the funeral with the help of the Oyo State Government.
The funeral service, organized by the Oyo State Government, took place at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan and was attended by a large group of mourners including family, friends, and government officials. Ministers from the Gospel Faith Mission International conducted the service.
In his speech at the ceremony, the Oyo State acting governor, Mr Bayo Lawal, praised Akinkunmi as a source of pride for the state, the nation, and the world, as Nigeria's flag flies in all embassies worldwide. He emphasized that the flag, as a lasting symbol for Nigeria, will continue to hold significance for years to come as long as the nation remains united.
The acting governor expressed his belief that the flag will serve as a reminder for all Nigerians to remain united, wherever they may be. He stated, "The Green represents our agricultural and natural resources, while the White signifies peace, tranquility, and serenity." He stressed the importance of peace and unity for progress and development in Nigeria.
Furthermore, Lawal urged the Federal Government to ensure that the legacy of Akinkunmi is duly recognized and immortalized. He called on the FG to be actively involved and not leave the burial ceremony solely to the family and state government.
In his appreciation, Mr Akinwumi, the son of the late designer, thanked the Oyo State Government for their support and contributions.
